A banned driver led police on a 70mph car chase through narrow town centre streets as horrified pedestrians dodged out of his way.
Merseyside Roads Policing Unit released footage showing Danny Smith tearing through the streets of St Helens in a stolen car.
The dangerous driver was hurtling down roads at more than twice the speed limit before he crashed into a Mercedes.
Smith smirked as he was sentenced to 14 months in jail for the chase in the stolen Vauxhall Corsa.
The judge branded the 20-year-old’s actions as the “worst case of dangerous driving” he had ever seen.
In one terrifying moment, he mounted the pavement at top speed to avoid traffic before eventually crashing into a passing Mercedes.
At his sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court , Judge Robert Warnock said: “This is probably the worst case of dangerous driving that I have come across both in my experience on the bench and at the Bar.
“It’s clear you have no regard for the law of anyone else effected by your dangerous driving. Sheer, untold, dangerous selfishness.”
Smith, already a disqualified driver, was seen deliberately reversing into a patrol car driven by Merseyside PC Sean Bennett during the chase, which happened in October.
Smith of St Helens, was sent to a young offenders’ institute for 14 months after admitting dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving with no licence or insurance.
