Donald Trump ‘s former campaign manager has sparked an angry backlash after mocking a child with Down Syndrome who was split from her mother at the US border.
Corey Lewandowski was discussing the plight of illegal immigrant families with democrat Zac Petankas on Fox News on Tuesday.
Petankas recalled the story of a 10-year-old girl with Down Syndrome who had been forcibly removed from her mother at the US-Mexico border.
Lewandowski rolled his eyes and responded with the words Womp womp when he was told of her ordeal, incensing his opponent.
Donald Trump just literally hugged the American flag after a speech
How dare you! How dare you! replies Petankas.
A video of the incident has been widely circulated on social media, with thousands of Twitter users condemning Lewandowski’s lack of compassion.
One user wrote They have no conscience. No compassion for their fellow man.
Another said You cannot claim to follow Christ and support a man who responds to the plight of a distressed child with Down Syndrome like he’s at a college football game. It’s evil.
Republicans have been under growing pressure to relax an immigration policy that sees children of would-be asylum seekers forcibly taken from their parents at the border.
Mexico’s Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray urged the US to reconsider the practice during a news conference in Mexico City.
This is a clear violation of human rights and puts children, including those with disabilities, in a vulnerable situation, he said.
US Homeland Security officials have said that their policy has resulted in the separation of at least 2,000 familes.
