The 28-year-old, who was born male and arrested as Bradley Manning, has said she will refuse to shorten her hair voluntarily or eat and drink until she is given “minimum standards of dignity, respect and humanity”.
Manning attempted suicide in July over what her representatives claimed was the US government’s denial to give her appropriate treatment for gender dysphoria.
She is now being investigated for misconduct as a result, and could be placed in indefinite solitary confinement or given additional prison time as punishment.
Her representatives also claim that doctors’ advice for Manning to follow “female hair grooming standards” have been rejected by the government.
The former intelligence analyst, who began hormone therapy last year, said in a statement: “I expect that this ordeal will last for a long time. Quite possibly until my permanent incapacitation or death. I am ready for this.”
A spokesman from the US Department of Defence is yet to comment on the claims.
Manning was convicted of espionage in 2013 after she was found guilty of providing more than 700,000 documents, diplomatic cables, videos and battlefield accounts to WikiLeaks, in what is believed to be the largest breach of classified materials in US history.
