Tortoise aged 100 walks more than 6.5 miles in 10 days after escaping her home

An 100-year-old tortoise who went missing from his home for 10 days has been found more than six miles away – and she may have been looking for LOVE.

Touche made an escape from his home with owner Nancy Knauss on August 9, and she was frantic to find her.

As well as being a centenarian, Touche is near-sighted and MS Knauss was understandably worried.

The 60-year-old who has had Touche since she was five years old, told KPMH : “We posted on a lot of sites and we put fliers in people’s mailboxes saying we had lost a tortoise and to please keep your eyes open, she could be in anybody’s yard or garden.”

The ‘lost tortoise’ ad placed on Craigslist read : “She is tame and was our pet for 55 years… We are heartbroken by this loss.

“She is about 12in wide and about 14in long. Has distinctive markings we can identify. She could be eating your flower garden as you’re reading this.”

The online community in Fresno, California kept their eyes open, and eventually there was good news.

After seeing the social media advertising, Steven George contacted Ms Knauss to say that he had spotted the pet – climbing onto a domed mount over his neighbour’s water pipe, which she may have assumed was a male fellow shell-dweller.

It means that Touche had covered more than 6.5 miles from her home in only 10 days.

There’s a lot of bad in the world right now, but there’s a lot of really good people that care, too,” Ms Knauss added after she was reunited with her beloved pet.
