Thames Pleasure Boat Ablaze Before Crash

Footage from eyewitnesses showed smoke billowing from the triple-decker vessel as it veered across the water and careered into pilings near Canary Wharf pier.

The London Fire Brigade said a small fire had broken out in the engine room of the 300-tonne Erasmus passenger boat, which was extinguished before their crews arrived.

Six crew and 142 passengers were evacuated after the incident at about 3.45pm on Sunday, while three other crew members remained on board.

The boat is currently “safe and secure” by the river bank with its anchor dropped and will be towed away shortly, the Port of London Authority said.

Transport for London’s river services from Canary Wharf were suspended.
