The Caucasus 2016 army drills were launched on Monday.
At the same time, the Army-2016 military-technical forum has opened in the Moscow region, with various regional events being held in other locations in Russia.
The defence ministry has said in a statement it dispatched more than 30 military aircraft on Wednesday to check the readiness of Russia’s air defence in the south.
