A state representative was arrested in Arkansas on Thursday after failing to pay taxes for the past 15 years.
Republican lawmaker Michael ‘Mickey’ Gates had not paid state income tax since 2003, resulting in a tax bill of $259.841.95 according to an arrest warrant filed in garland County.
Gates had been interviewed about this fact back on June 15 and said that he was under the impression that his tax bill was being filed for him per that warrant.
He was released on $1500 bail soon after he was booked, and despite his meeting with authorities two weeks ago was surprised by the arrest according to his lawyer.

Gates, who is from Hot Springs, has served in the state Legislature since 2015 and is preparing to run for re-election in November against a Democratic challenger.
He will only be charged with not paying taxes for six years due to the statute of limitations on the offense.
Soon after, Gates was suspended from all leadership and committee positions by the house leader who said he would be monitoring the situation closely in the coming months.
