Recycling rejects

A 23 Aug article (“Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of recycling is being diverted to landfill”) mistakenly suggested that 338,000 tonnes of recycling sorted by families was diverted to landfill or incinerated last year mainly due to the cost of re-sorting recycling bins that have been contaminated by non-recyclable waste.

In fact, most of the 338,000 tonnes consisted of items that were non-recyclable anyway and which were rejected at sorting plants – only 1,500 tonnes was attributable to vehicle loads of material being rejected at sorting facilities.

Statistics indicate that of the 11m tonnes of material collected for recycling by English local authorities in 2014/15, 97% was in fact recycled. The article has now been removed from the site.
