Perth man charged thousands of dollars for firing a Nerf gun at fellow motorist

A Perth motorist has been charged thousands of dollars for shooting a Nerf gun at someone driving in another car.

Christopher Ron Grimshaw, 23, was fined $3500 and ordered to pay $190.85 costs for shooting foam Nerf projectiles at a fellow motorist while they were driving down Marangaroo Drive in Girrawheen.

The court heard that Grimshaw, who was a passenger in the car, fired the Nerf gun at at his friend’s sister who was driving in the other car, the Joondalup Times reported.

Grimshaw appeared at the Joondalup Magistrates Court over the incident which took place in January.

No one was hurt in the Nerf war but one of the darts did hit the woman’s hand.

Grimshaw was charged with one count of causing fear with object or substance to people in conveyances.

Grimshaw told the court he thought the charges were ‘a joke at first’.

But Magistrate Gregory Benn said that Grimshaw was old enough to know better.

‘It’s the stupidity of the offending,’ he said.

The police prosecutor argued that while it may have seemed like a joke at the time the behaviour could have led to a serious crash.

The prosecution pushed for a ‘significant fine.’

In awarding the fine Magistrate Benn pointed out the maximum penalty for the offence was seven years in jail.
