My Big Fat Greek Wedding’s Nia Vardalos and Ian Gomez said in a statement that their decision to split ‘is completely mutual and amicable,’ and that they’ve ‘been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time.’
The statement came amid news that 55-year-old actress/writer filed for divorce from actor Gomez, 52, after 25 years of marriage, TMZ reported Tuesday. The couple tied the knot in 1993 and in 2008 adopted their daughter Ilaria Vardalos Gomez, 11.
The couple’s full statement read, ‘We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time. Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable.

Her marriage was a point of inspiration for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a romantic comedy based on her real-life experience as a Canadian of Greek descent looking for love.
The motion picture, which co-starred Michael Constantine, John Corbett, Lainie Kazan and Joey Fatone, was released in theatres in 2002 and became one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time.
