Alonso Perez, 25, was alone in an interview room when he snapped the hinge of the handcuffs, which were attached to a metal bar on a table bolted to the floor.
Mr Perez – who is alleged to have murdered a man in a McDonald’s restaurant – is then seen returning to his seat and covering the bar as an officer enters to check on him.
Around 15 minutes later the 25-year-old used a chair to climb into the ceiling, before he broke tiles to jump back down into the police station’s main hallway.
Police said Mr Perez, who was still wearing ankle chains, then left the station and escaped after discovering a truck with the keys in the ignition. No one noticed the murder suspect was missing until 25 minutes later, police chief Alexander Perez said.
The officer added: “We’re not perfect, the police are simply not perfect.
“However we will learn from our mistakes.”
He added it was the first time anyone had escaped from an interview room during his 25 years as an officer in North Las Vegas.
The truck was recovered later the same day in a neighbourhood several miles east of downtown Las Vegas.
Three days after his escape Mr Perez was re-arrested at an apartment close to where the truck was found.
He has been charged with murder, use of a firearm, escaping from custody and car theft, and is expected to appear in court on Friday.
Police have launched an internal investigation.
