Sickening footage showing older men apparently creeping into the room of a vulnerable teenage girl who later died of a drug overdose has been screened at the inquest into her tragic death.
The 15-year-old, known as “Girl X”, died in 2014 of an apparent speedball overdose – a lethal cocktail of heroin and methamphetamine.
Before her death, she was regularly visited by older men, who exploited her vulnerability to push her into drug dealing and prostitution, the court heard.
It was alleged she had been repeatedly raped by two workers at a different care facility, with one expert saying had she survived her traumatic childhood she would most likely have developed a ‘severe personality disorder’.
Staff at Gordon House, the facility in north west Sydney where the girl died, told the inquest they struggled to control the number of people sneaking into the home and spending the night with children in their care.
A case worker giving evidence at the inquest on Wednesday said the girl’s room had become a “drop-in house” where people would “come and go at all hours”.
On more than one occasion, the female caseworker chased up to 10 people out of Girl X’s room, only for them to clamber back in through a window.
Two years before she died, Girl X was allegedly raped ‘repeatedly’ by two workers at a different foster care facility.
A male caseworker giving evidence at the inquest said the abuse she had received throughout her life was some of the worst he had seen in 26-year-career.
“She was the child who had the least reason to trust adults,” he said.
“If a young person had the right to tell an adult to f*** off, it was [her].
“If you could write a text book on how to traumatise a child, it would be (Girl X).”
CCTV footage played at the inquest showed a man entering the girl’s room two nights before her death.
The man took heroin with the teen, and woke up the following morning to find her unconscious and breathing stangely.
He called for help and although paramedics were able to re-start the girls heart she never regained conciousness.
She died in hospital the following morning, on April 21 2014.
At the time of her death, she had been due to give evidence in the trial of one of the men who allegedly raped her at the other facility, a prospect that made her severely anxious, the inquest heard.
That case has since been dropped.
