Meghan Markle’s dad Thomas apologises for paparazzi stunt and reveals why he set up pictures

Meghan Markle’s dad has apologised for staging paparazzi pictures in the run up to the royal wedding .

Thomas Markle hit the headlines after he was caught on CCTV with a photographer setting up snaps in an internet cafe.

The 73-year-old broke his silence, claiming the stunt was not about money but about changing his image after a series of negative pictures.

In his first ever TV interview, he told Good Morning Britain I thought it would be a nice way of improving my look, but obviously that all went to hell.

I feel bad about it, I apologised for it, it was a mistake.

Speaking of his phone conversation with Meghan and Harry in the aftermath of the furore, Thomas said I spoke to them both and I apologised.

I realised it was a serious mistake. It’s hard to take it back.

Thomas missed his daughter’s big day as he recovered from heart surgery.

Speaking about the moment when he told the couple he would not make the wedding, Mr Markle told the programme They were disappointed.

Meghan cried, I’m sure, and they both said, ‘Take care of yourself, we are really worried about you’.

On Charles walking his daughter down the aisle, he said I was honoured, I can’t think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles.

Thomas also revealed her made Prince Harry promise ‘not to raise his hand against my daughter’ when the royal asked to marry his daughter.

In an explosive interview, the retired lighting engineer revealed what the Duke of Sussex told him about Brexit and US President Donald Trump.

Thomas Snr is also yet to meet any of his daughter’s new family.

Mr Markle spoke of the moment the Duke of Sussex asked for permission to marry the then Ms Markle.

He told the programme Harry asked for her hand on the phone and I said ‘You are a gentleman, promise me you will never raise your hand against my daughter and of course I will grant you my permission’.

The father of the Duchess of Sussex said he was not fazed by his daughter marrying into the monarchy.

He told Good Morning Britain he had held phone calls with the Duke of Sussex, adding He’s great, he’s an interesting guy.

When asked how he felt about the former Suits star’s nuptials, he said My daughter has been a princess since the day she was born.

He added He made a good pick, didn’t he.

He also discussed conversations he’s had with Prince Harry – who he is yet to meet face-to-face.

It’s been over the phone, we’ve had some interesting conversations on the phone. He’s a smart guy. He’s an interesting guy.

I was complaining I didn’t like Donald Trump. He said give Donald Trump a chance, I sort of disagreed with that.

The 73-year-old added I think he was open to the experiment (of Brexit).

I absolutely wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle, said Mr Markle, who did not travel to Windsor for the wedding due to health reasons.

I’m recovering from a heart operation but I’m doing much better, he told GMB.
