Meghan Markle’s dad has apologised for staging paparazzi pictures in the run up to the royal wedding .
Thomas Markle hit the headlines after he was caught on CCTV with a photographer setting up snaps in an internet cafe.
The 73-year-old broke his silence, claiming the stunt was not about money but about changing his image after a series of negative pictures.
In his first ever TV interview, he told Good Morning Britain I thought it would be a nice way of improving my look, but obviously that all went to hell.
I feel bad about it, I apologised for it, it was a mistake.
Speaking of his phone conversation with Meghan and Harry in the aftermath of the furore, Thomas said I spoke to them both and I apologised.
I realised it was a serious mistake. It’s hard to take it back.
Thomas missed his daughter’s big day as he recovered from heart surgery.
Speaking about the moment when he told the couple he would not make the wedding, Mr Markle told the programme They were disappointed.
Meghan cried, I’m sure, and they both said, ‘Take care of yourself, we are really worried about you’.

It’s been over the phone, we’ve had some interesting conversations on the phone. He’s a smart guy. He’s an interesting guy.
I was complaining I didn’t like Donald Trump. He said give Donald Trump a chance, I sort of disagreed with that.
The 73-year-old added I think he was open to the experiment (of Brexit).
I absolutely wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle, said Mr Markle, who did not travel to Windsor for the wedding due to health reasons.
I’m recovering from a heart operation but I’m doing much better, he told GMB.
