A man bit off part of a police officer’s ear while trying to escape arrest after being found stumbling along a motorway.
Cornelius Carey Jr, 44, attacked the Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper during a scuffle on the 11th of January, court records say.
Carey, who police believed was drunk, is now facing jail after video emerged of his attack on the officer – who was hospitalised and is awaiting plastic surgery to repair the damage.
Prosecutors requested that Carey undergo tests for communicable diseases, local news site cleveland.com reported.
A Judge ordered that Carey be taken to a medical facility for a full blood screening.
A woman called the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office about 6.45am and said Carey appeared drunk and was walking in the road.
Trooper Lance Deshuk was dispatched to the scene and quickly found Carey who then immediately attacked the officer, hitting him in the face.
Another woman called the Sheriff’s Office and said she witnessed Carey and Deshuk wrestling in the middle of the road.
Additional officers arrived several minutes later to help the trooper.
A third caller said Carey put Deshuk in a choke hold, but Deshuk later got him under control and in handcuffs, according to the 911 call.
Court records say Deshuk was hospitalized and awaiting immediate surgery, but his current condition was not immediately available Thursday afternoon.
