Nine people were injured in a collision between a minibus and a van closing a 13 mile stretch of the M25 this morning.
Two of the passengers were seriously injured in the crash which saw a driver arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
The entire motorway was closed for the air ambulance to land on the road with doctors and paramedics to treat the injured.
The anti-clockwise section of the M25 between junction 13, Staines, Surrey, and junction 12, where the London orbital meets crosses the M3 at Thorpe, Surrey, was closed shortly after the crash at 1.30am.
Police were urging motorists to avoid the area which large queues developing as traffic was diverted off the motorway as well as on the clockwise section.
A spokesman for Surrey Police said the motorway was closed for accident investigation work and resurfacing after a fuel spillage and appealed for anyone with dashcam or helmet camera footage of the crash or the minibus and the van in the lead up to the crash, to contact them.
At 0130 emergency services were called to a collision involving a white transit van and a minibus carrying passengers, shortly before Junction 12.
In total nine people have been injured, two seriously. A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, said the spokesman.
The road was closed in both directions to allow an air ambulance to land.
Although the M25 has now reopened clockwise, the anticlockwise stretch remains closed to allow the scene to be cleared, there has been a fuel spillage, and the collision investigators to carry out their work.
Officers are working as fast as they can, however the closure is likely to impact on the rush hour, and drivers are advised to seek alternatives if possible.
Highways England were appealing to drivers to leave the M25 at J13 and take the A30 towards London, then join the A3308 at the Crooked Billet roundabout (towards Kingston), then the M3 from the Sunbury Cross roundabout.

Highways England added M25 anti-clockwise between J15 (M4) and J14 near HeathrowAirport.
We had traffic stopped to allow TrafficOfficers to move a vehicle involved in an earlier collision.
All now moved and traffic moving again. Delays of around 10 minutes on the approach will start to ease.(sic)
They have since tweeted Specialist recovery is now on scene at M25 anti-clockwise btwn J13 and J12 which remains CLOSED due to a collision.
