The mum of murdered toddler James Bulger has slammed Facebook trolls who claimed she let the tragic tot ‘run around’ the shopping centre he was abducted from 25 years ago.
Denise Fergus hit back at social media users who posted ‘sick’ claims that she had let James, 2, run around the Strand shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside, before he was snatched and murdered by Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.
And the devastated mum wrote on Facebook that she has been ill since the abuse started.
Can I just say I haven’t been well for the past couple of weeks, which is why I’ve done no interviews…. but I will tell my side once I’m feeling better, she wrote.
The vile comments were posted online following the harrowing ITV documentary ‘James Bulger A Mother’s Story’ on the 25th anniversary of his abduction and murder, the Daily Record reports.
The case changed the UK legal system, lowering the age of criminal responsibility to 10.
Denise said The tiny number of people posting negative comments are not worthy of comment. They are just sickening.
Despite some social media taunts Denise said she has been ‘overwhelmed’ by the wave of supportive messages she received since the documentary, fronted by Sir Trevor McDonald, was aired on Thursday night.
Denise said I’ve been overwhelmed by the many thousands of kind messages I’ve received and the generous donations sent to our ‘For James’ charity.
I can hardly express how deeply moved and touched I have been at the support that has poured in.
This support has also seen Denise’s petition demanding a public inquiry into the case hit 169,799 signatures.
When the petition surpassed 100,000 signatures yesterday Denise tweeted Wow we’ve done it again, thanks to everyone who have signed and shared my petition.
Your support has once again been amazing, I’m so lucky to have you all on board.
You have been with me throughout my very long journey and have never given up.
Thank you so much.
Her husband, Stuart Fergus also hit out at trolls who claimed Denise was accused of not looking after James.
Furious Stuart said of the troll Check the police records which state all CCTV was checked.
He wasn’t left to ‘run’ around the shopping centre.
Denise states she let go of his hand to get her purse and pay for some food… turned round and he was gone. Read her book, you absolute cretin.
Some people are so heartless and don’t seem to care… what an idiot!
