Helen Glover and Steve Backshall marry in spectacular coastal ceremony

Olympic gold medallist Helen Glover got married to Steve Backshall this weekend in a stunning coastal ceremony.

Pictures showed the couple, who met at a Sport Relief event in 2014, carefully climbing up a rocky outcrop before embracing near Pisky Cove near Penzance in Cornwall.

Glover, 30, who only arrived back in the UK a month ago having won gold at the Rio Olympics, was wearing a detailed lace dress, while Backshall, 43, opted for a grey suit.

Around 200 guests are thought to have attended the ceremony before reportedly being served ice cream from Glover’s father’s shop in Newlyn.

The couple were congratulated by fans, friends and family on social media. One onlooker wrote on Twitter: Walking at Prussia Cove #Cornwall on Saturday. Lucky enough to see from afar wedding of @HelenGloverGB. Wishing you so much happiness #heroine.

Presenter Naomi Wilkinson, who is thought to have attended the wedding, posted a picture of a lego Steve standing on a crocodile and Helen in a rowing boat.

She added: An absolutely perfect wedding weekend for such a fantastic couple. Congratulations @SteveBackshall and @HelenGloverGB.

Ben Garrod, a biologist, posted a picture of a large white marquee decked with fairy lights. He added: I have had THE most fun weekend in a long time – congratulations @SteveBackshall and @HelenGloverGB.

Another picture showed guests gathered on the beach as a boat was launched from the sand.

The couple got engaged during a trip to Namibia in September last year. Backshall later revealed he cried after getting down on one knee in the desert.

Their nuptials came after the athlete previously revealed she had been focused on defending her coxless pair title with her partner, Heather Stanning, that she had not had time to think about getting married.

She told This Morning in August: I was so focused on the Olympics, one of the first things Heather said to me afterwards is ‘you’re getting married now’.

Rather than a long countdown it is going to be a three-week countdown. It is really exciting.
