Footballer dies after collapsing during match

Daniel Wilkinson suffered a suspected heart attack during a cup game against Brighouse Town FC on Monday night.

The 26-year-old defender was treated by medics on the pitch for more than 30 minutes before being taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.

The club confirmed on Tuesday morning he had “sadly passed away”.

Thank you all for your wishes, thoughts and especially prayers for our Daniel Wilkinson . We have no further news at the moment

Craig Wood, chairman of the Barnsley-based Northern Premier League Division One South club, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time.

“The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night. There are no more words at this time.”

Scores of tributes were posted on the club’s Facebook page, including from players of other clubs.

Keith Trudgeon wrote: “What sad news. Thoughts are with his family, friends and all at Shaw lane AFC from all at Stalybridge Celtic. The non league family is united in grief.”

Our thoughts are with everyone at @SLAquaFC at this very hard time.

Wilkinson started his career with Hull before moving into the non-league set-up.

Julie Gibson wrote: “As a Hull City supporter I remember Danny and his team mates of that era. So unbelievably sad and tragic. Thinking of his family right now.”

Tony Grantham said he had not only lost one of his best mates, but an older brother. He wrote: “Going to miss having you around mate. Thanks for the amazing memories and good times we had. Keep a cold one for me up there. No Coor light banter!! Love you man Danny wilks x.”

Brighouse Town FC said in a statement on its website: “Words are not enough to capture the complete sense of despair and desolation that surrounds the club this morning following last night’s tragic event.

“Our thoughts and support also go out to our footballing friends at Shaw Lane and huge thanks also must be paid to the volunteers and emergency response teams who tried valiantly to save Dan’s life.

“Rest in peace young man – the world is a poorer place without you.”
