Five people injured following shooting at funeral home in California as 'gunfire breaks out during service'

Five people were injured following a shooting at a funeral home in California on Thursday.

Police say the shooting took place at Church of the Chimes, a crematorium and funeral home in Hayward, a suburban neighbourhood located in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dozens of officers surrounded the 62-acre site after they were called to investigate the incident at around 7.15pm local time.

Three of the victims were rushed to hospital by medics where their condition is unknown.

A police spokesperson said Officers arrived and found three people suffering from gunshot wounds. The names, ages, and gender of the victims is not being released at this time. All three victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The condition of the victims is not known.

During the investigation two additional victims were located. One was contacted by police a distance away from the shooting scene, and the other one self-transported to a local hospital.

One Twitter user posted a picture of the large police presence at the scene to Twitter.

They wrote So many cops in Union City apparently few people shot dead during a funeral service. What happened?

The local BART train service from Hayward was partially suspended due to police activity.

Police are still on the hunt for the suspect.
