Multiple shots have been fired at a bus stop in London causing a terrified crowd to flee in panic.
The area in New Cross, south east London, has since been sealed off by police officers at the scene.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident took place at 8.15pm this evening, with witnesses claiming to have heard five shots.
One onlooker told the Evening Standard: “I just heard a loud pop, looked down the road about 20 metres in front of me and I saw a male in a hoodie holding a gun just firing.”
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police in Lewisham are appealing for witnesses and information following the discharge of a firearm in New Cross.
“Police were called at around 8.15pm on Wednesday, August 24, to reports of shots fired in New Cross Road, near to the junction of Billington Road.
“Officers attended the scene but found non injured parties, and there have been no reports of anyone injured at this time.
“Evidence of a discharge of a firearm was found and a crime scene is currently in place, causing the temporary closure of New Cross Road.”
Footage from the incident shows the panic that followed, with the author saying on film: “Anyone could have been at this bus stop.”
Transport for London confirmed that New Cross Road, between Queen’s Road and Billington Road, has been shut as an investigation takes place.
