All Blacks star Sonny Bill Williams held a traditional Islamic birth ceremony for his newborn son, Zaid.   

In an Instagram post shared on Sunday, the 32-year-old said he feels ‘blessed’ after the birth of his first son and shared a photo from baby Zaid’s aqeeqah.

‘Our Son Zaid’s aqeeqah (birth ceremony) – I honestly can’t describe the joy that I feel when I look at my fanau,’ he captioned.

‘What a blessing it is to have to 3 healthy children – Also want to acknowledge my beautiful wife Alana.

He added ‘The way you hold down this family and look after all of us makes me so proud and inspires me. We rolling deep with our squad now BABY! Haha! Cheeehoooooo blessings & love always team.’

In Islam, an aqeeqa is the traditional sacrifice of an animal after a child’s birth and the meat is given to the poor.

For a boy the sacrifice involves two goats, for a girl one goat is sacrificed. 

Sonny, who converted to Islam in 2009, announced the birth of Zaid on June 29.

He shared a tender black and white snap of the bub’s hands.

He captioned the photo ‘Zaid Williams. Asalamualakium son – mummy, daddy and your sisters love you so much.’

The word ‘Asalamualakium’ means ‘may peace be upon you’ in Arabic and is a traditional Muslim greeting.

In addition to Zaid, te also shares two children Imaan, two, and 18-month-old Aisha, with wife Alana Raffie.

The couple married in 2013 after a whirlwind six-month romance.
